Ishaq Dar Highlights South Asia's Security

Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar addressed a seminar in Islamabad on Wednesday, emphasizing growing disputes that threaten global peace. He warned that the 92-hour war between Pakistan and India in May could have escalated into something more devastating. Dar stressed that while states have historically used force to resolve disputes, the changing global economic landscape calls for dialogue and diplomacy.

Dar pointed out that South Asia faces a multitude of challenges, including poverty, illiteracy, and natural calamities. He highlighted food shortages and climate change as growing threats to the region, with rising temperatures and floods severely impacting economies. He also mentioned that the trade volume between South Asian countries remains low, hovering around five percent.

As the foreign minister, Dar noted that South Asia’s security scenario is becoming increasingly complex. He specifically referenced India’s suspension of the Indus Water Treaty (IWT) and the unresolved Kashmir dispute, both of which pose significant threats to regional peace. He called for a serious approach to resolving these long-standing issues.

Dar also addressed the high population density in South Asia, urging regional countries to prioritize solutions to these challenges. He emphasized that collaborative efforts are essential for mutual prosperity in the region. The deputy prime minister pointed out the need for deeper regional cooperation to achieve sustainable growth.

In conclusion, Dar called for greater focus on diplomacy, trade, and cooperation to improve the stability and prosperity of South Asia. He urged countries in the region to work together to address security, economic, and environmental issues for long-term peace and development.
